The long road to release for Squadron 42 just got significantly longer. Cloud Imperium Games has confirmed that its single-player Star Citizen spin-off has been pushed back to Q2 2027 — and according to studio founder Chris Roberts, the record-breaking hype surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 played a major role in the decision.
A Decade-Long Wait Gets Even Longer
Squadron 42 has become one of the most notoriously protracted development cycles in gaming history. Originally announced way back in 2012 as part of the record-breaking Star Citizen crowdfunding campaign, the cinematic single-player campaign has been rebuilt, re-scoped, and delayed numerous times over the years.
Most recently, the game had been targeting a 2026 release window, and backers were cautiously optimistic after a playable slice was shown to the public. Now, those hopes have been dashed once again, with the new launch target landing in the second quarter of 2027 — roughly fifteen years after the project was first pitched to fans.
Chris Roberts Points the Finger at GTA 6
Fearing a Head-to-Head Showdown
In a message explaining the delay, Chris Roberts didn’t mince words about his reasoning. The studio boss argued that releasing Squadron 42 anywhere near GTA 6 — currently slated for November 2026 — would see the space epic completely overshadowed by Rockstar’s juggernaut.
His logic is hard to argue with. GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated entertainment release of all time, with its reveal trailer smashing viewing records within hours. When it arrives, it will dominate gaming headlines, social media conversation, streaming platforms, and player attention for months. Any major title launching in its shadow risks being drowned out entirely, regardless of quality.
A Strategic Retreat Rather Than a Setback?
Notably, Roberts framed the delay as a strategic scheduling decision rather than a sign of development trouble. Moving to Q2 2027 gives the game clear air, allowing it to command the spotlight on its own terms rather than compete for scraps of attention during the biggest gaming launch in a generation.
Is the Delay Actually a Smart Move?
There’s a reasonable case that this is shrewd business, even if it stings for backers. History is littered with games that launched near industry titans and faded into obscurity. A high-budget, story-driven space simulation like Squadron 42 — starring Hollywood talent including Mark Hamill and Gary Oldman — needs sustained word-of-mouth to succeed, and that simply won’t happen in a GTA 6-dominated news cycle.
On the other hand, sceptics will note that Star Citizen’s development has been defined by missed targets, and external factors like GTA 6 provide a convenient explanation for yet another slip. With well over $700 million raised from backers over the years, patience among the community is wearing thin for some, even as others continue to defend the project’s ambition.
What This Means for Star Citizen Fans
For now, the persistent universe of Star Citizen continues to evolve independently, and Cloud Imperium will no doubt use the extra time to polish Squadron 42’s campaign, cinematics, and flight combat systems. Whether the 2027 window finally holds remains to be seen — but at the very least, the game won’t have to share its launch window with the biggest entertainment phenomenon on the planet.
