The road to Super Earth just took a surprising turn. According to Deadline, Reacher star Alan Ritchson is reportedly set to replace Jason Momoa as the lead of Sony’s in-development Helldivers movie. Momoa, who had previously been attached to the video game adaptation, exited the project earlier this year — and now another famously towering leading man appears ready to strap on the armor.
One Aquaman Out, Another One In
There’s a delicious irony in this casting shuffle. Jason Momoa famously played Aquaman on the big screen for the DC Extended Universe, but longtime TV fans will remember that Alan Ritchson also portrayed Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, during his run on Smallville. In other words, one very large Aquaman has stepped aside, and another very large (Aqua)Man is stepping up — this time trading the trident for a laser rifle and a hearty serving of Super Earth propaganda.
Why Alan Ritchson Fits the Helldiver Mold
Ritchson has built much of his career on playing physically imposing figures, and his profile has never been higher thanks to his acclaimed turn as Jack Reacher in Amazon’s hit series Reacher. Beyond that, his resume includes Gloss in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Raphael in the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, and a memorable role in Fast X.
More Than Muscle
What makes Ritchson an especially intriguing fit for Helldivers is his knack for deadpan comedy. Reacher works largely because Ritchson plays an absurdly capable fighting machine with completely straight-faced sincerity — exactly the tone that Helldivers’ satirical, Starship Troopers-style universe demands. A Helldiver should be fearless, loyal, and blissfully oblivious to the fact that they’re a cog in a gloriously over-the-top war machine, and Ritchson has already proven he can deliver that exact energy.
Justin Lin Remains in the Director’s Chair
While the lead actor has changed, the director has not. Justin Lin, best known for steering multiple entries in the Fast & Furious franchise as well as Star Trek Beyond, remains attached to direct the Helldivers movie. Lin’s track record of large-scale, ensemble-driven action should translate well to the chaotic, explosive battlefields of Helldivers — and given that Ritchson already appeared in Fast X, there’s an existing Fast family connection here as well.
Release Date: A Long Wait for Democracy
Sony currently has the Helldivers movie scheduled to hit theaters on November 10, 2027. That’s a lengthy runway, but it reflects the increasingly careful approach studios are taking with video game adaptations — locking in the right script, tone, and cast before cameras roll.
The Game Behind the Movie
For the uninitiated, Helldivers is set in a satirical future where humanity’s “managed democracy” sends waves of enthusiastic soldiers across the galaxy to battle bugs, robots, and worse — often dying in hilarious friendly-fire incidents along the way. Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Playstation, became one of 2024’s biggest breakout hits, which is precisely why Sony is now pushing the property to the big screen.
