One of the longest-running “what ifs” in the Persona community has finally been addressed. Despite years of speculation fueled by cut content from the original game, Atlus has confirmed that Persona 4 Revival will not include a romance route for Yosuke Hanamura — even though the development team genuinely considered it.
The Romance That Almost Was
Longtime Persona 4 fans know the story well. When the game originally launched back in 2008, dataminers uncovered unused voice lines buried in the game’s files that strongly suggested Yosuke — the protagonist’s loyal right-hand man and first true friend in the sleepy town of Inaba — was at one point designed to be a romanceable social link.
Those lines never made it into the final release. Instead, Yosuke shipped as a character whose recurring homophobic jokes and comments became one of the more criticized aspects of an otherwise beloved JRPG. Unlike other characters who grow over the course of the story, Yosuke arguably never really moves past that mentality — a point of frustration for players who saw the potential in his bond with the protagonist.
Why Atlus Is Leaving the Romance Out
Speaking about the upcoming remake, Persona 4 Revival’s producer confirmed that the team did discuss the possibility of finally restoring the cut Yosuke romance. Unfortunately for hopeful fans, the idea was ultimately shelved. As the producer bluntly put it, implementing the romance properly would simply be “a lot of work.”
It’s a practical answer, if a deflating one. Adding a full romance route isn’t just a matter of flipping a switch — it would require new dialogue, re-recorded voice acting in multiple languages, new social link events, and careful adjustments to how Yosuke’s story arc integrates with the rest of the narrative. For a remake already rebuilding the entire game from the ground up, that extra scope apparently didn’t make the cut.

The news isn’t all doom and gloom for Yosuke’s characterization, though. Atlus has indicated that Persona 4 Revival will be tweaking Yosuke somewhat, which many interpret as an effort to soften the homophobic humor that dragged down the original. So while the romance door stays closed, the character himself may land differently with modern audiences.
A Sign of the Times for Persona
This debate sits within a broader conversation about romance in Atlus games. The Persona series has historically only offered romance options with female confidants, and fans have increasingly called for more inclusive options as the franchise’s audience grows. Whether Persona 6 eventually embraces that shift remains to be seen, but for now, Persona 4 Revival will stick close to the original’s relationship structure — with modernized presentation and quality-of-life improvements doing the heavy lifting.
