Lollipop Chainsaw Slashes Onto the Big Screen: Live-Action Prequel Movie Officially in the Works

Zombie-slaying cheerleader Juliet Starling is heading to Hollywood. A live-action Lollipop Chainsaw movie is officially in development at Dragami Games, the studio that currently holds the rights to the cult-classic franchise — and rather than simply retelling the game’s story, the film will serve as a prequel, exploring Juliet’s life before the undead apocalypse turned her world upside down.

What We Know About the Live-Action Movie

The adaptation is being shepherded by Dragami Games, the Japanese studio that has been spearheading the franchise’s revival in recent years. Positioned as a prequel, the movie will dive into Juliet Starling’s everyday life before the zombie outbreak that kicked off the 2012 action game — think high school drama, cheerleading, and a family dynasty of zombie hunters, all before things get gloriously bloody.

One name fans should not expect to see in the credits, however, is James Gunn. The Guardians of the Galaxy and Superman director co-wrote the original game’s screenplay, but he will not be involved with the film. Viewers hoping for Gunn’s signature blend of irreverent humor and over-the-top action will have to wait and see what the new creative team brings to the table.

A Quick Refresher: What Is Lollipop Chainsaw?

For the uninitiated, Lollipop Chainsaw launched in 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and directed by the legendary Goichi “Suda51” Suda, with James Gunn on writing duties, the game follows Juliet Starling, a cheerleader at San Romero High School who moonlights as a zombie hunter. Armed with her trusty pink chainsaw and backed by her delightfully eccentric family, Juliet carves through hordes of the undead to rescue her school — and her boyfriend’s severed, yet still living, head.

Despite a mixed critical reception at launch, the game’s neon-soaked visuals, razor-sharp humor, and kinetic combat earned it a devoted cult following that has only grown stronger over the past decade.

From Cult Classic to Modern Remaster

The movie announcement is the latest piece of the franchise’s ongoing comeback. Dragami Games previously released Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, a remaster of the original, bringing Juliet’s chainsaw-wielding chaos to modern platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. With the remaster reintroducing the game to a whole new audience, a feature film could push the franchise’s visibility higher than ever before.

Can the Movie Capture the Game’s Magic?

Hollywood’s track record with video game adaptations has improved dramatically in recent years, with hits like The Last of Us, Fallout, and Sonic the Hedgehog proving that games can translate successfully to both big and small screens. But Lollipop Chainsaw presents a unique challenge: its appeal lies in an absurd, self-aware tone where bubblegum pop aesthetics collide with graphic zombie gore. Striking that balance in live action will require a very deft hand.

Making the film a prequel, however, is a savvy move. It frees the filmmakers from a beat-for-beat retelling of the game and lets them expand the lore of the Starling family, whose zombie-hunting heritage was always one of the most entertaining parts of the original. With no release date or casting details revealed yet, expect more information to surface as production moves forward.
