The legendary Square Enix developer and director of the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4 has once again set the fandom ablaze, and this time it was not a trailer or a cryptic interview quote. Black Honey Chili Cookie: The Shirt That Launched a Thousand Theories
During a recent appearance, Nomura was spotted wearing a shirt featuring Black Honey Chili Cookie, a fictional band from within The World Ends With You universe. To the average observer, the design looks like ordinary band merch. To longtime fans of the cult-classic action RPG, however, it is a neon flashing sign.
As Kotaku pointed out, Black Honey Chili Cookie either means absolutely nothing to you or something very specific. There is no in-between. The band is a deep-cut reference that only dedicated players of The World Ends With You and its 2021 sequel, NEO: The World Ends With You, would instantly recognize, which is precisely why the fandom reacted the way it did.
Nomura Never Does Anything by Accident
Tetsuya Nomura is not just the director of Kingdom Hearts 4. He is also the original creative mind behind The World Ends With You, having directed the 2008 Nintendo DS classic and designed its unforgettable Shibuya cast. Given his long history of planting cryptic hints about future projects in interviews, artwork, and promotional material, fans have learned to treat everything he wears or says as a potential clue.
A director of his stature could wear literally any shirt in his wardrobe. Choosing one tied to a series that fans have been begging Square Enix to revisit? That is catnip for speculation.
The Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You Connection Runs Deep
This would not be the first time the two franchises have crossed paths. The World Ends With You characters Neku, Shiki, Joshua, Beat, and Rhyme famously appeared in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, introducing a whole generation of players to Shibuya’s Reapers’ Game.
Even more compelling is the setting of Kingdom Hearts 4 itself. The game takes place largely in Quadratum, a hyper-realistic city strongly resembling Tokyo, and the ending of Kingdom Hearts 3 famously teased Sora standing in a Shibuya crossing that looked suspiciously like the one from The World Ends With You. Yozora and the whole Verum Rex storyline have only added fuel to that fire.
What Fans Think It Could Mean
The theories are already stacking up. Some believe TWEWY characters could appear in Quadratum during the events of Kingdom Hearts 4, finally paying off years of teases. Others suspect Nomura is hinting at a brand-new The World Ends With You project, whether a sequel to NEO or a remaster collection. The more skeptical voices argue it may simply be a director proudly repping a series he created.
Whatever the truth is, one thing is certain: Nomura knew exactly what reaction that shirt would produce.
