GTA 6 on Nintendo Switch 2 “Makes No Sense,” Says Former Rockstar Dev — But He’s Not Ruling It Out

Grand Theft Auto 6 remains the most anticipated game on the planet, and with the Nintendo Switch 2 now on shelves, one question keeps popping up in gaming communities: could Rockstar’s juggernaut ever land on Nintendo’s new hardware? According to a former Rockstar developer, that scenario is highly unlikely — though not entirely impossible.

What the Former Rockstar Developer Said

The comments come from Obbe Vermeij, a former technical director at Rockstar North who worked on the studio’s games for years before departing the company. When the topic of a potential GTA 6 port for the Nintendo Switch 2 came up, Vermeij was blunt: bringing the game to Nintendo’s console simply “doesn’t make sense.”

The System-Seller Argument

His reasoning has less to do with hardware and more to do with business logic. As Vermeij explained, when a franchise is as massive as Grand Theft Auto, players will buy whatever console they need in order to play it. In other words, anyone who wants GTA 6 will buy a PS5 (or an Xbox Series X|S) to get your game — Rockstar doesn’t need to chase the Switch 2 audience, because the audience will come to them.

It’s hard to argue with that logic. GTA 5 has sold well over 200 million copies, and each new mainline GTA entry has historically moved consoles by the millions. When your game is a system seller, porting it to additional platforms becomes a matter of opportunity cost rather than necessity.

The Technical Challenge of Bringing GTA 6 to Switch 2

Business logic aside, the technical side of the equation doesn’t favor a port either. The Nintendo Switch 2 is a significant step up from its predecessor, featuring more modern internals and DLSS support, but GTA 6 is being built from the ground up to squeeze everything out of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Rumors and reports suggest GTA 6 will feature a sprawling, dense open world set across Vice City and the state of Leonida — the kind of living, breathing environment that demands enormous amounts of memory, storage bandwidth, and raw processing power. Even if a Switch 2 version were technically feasible, it would likely require heavy compromises to resolution, draw distance, and world density.

Nintendo and GTA: A Complicated History

It’s also worth remembering that mainline numbered GTA titles have never launched on a Nintendo home console. Nintendo platforms have only ever received spin-offs like GTA: Chinatown Wars on the DS or remasters of older titles. A full, day-one GTA 6 port would be an unprecedented move for Rockstar — and precedent suggests it isn’t in the studio’s DNA.

Why the Door Isn’t Fully Closed

That said, Vermeij didn’t completely discount the idea. The Switch 2 is far more capable than the original Switch, and the gaming industry has seen plenty of “impossible” ports happen before — The Witcher 3 and Doom Eternal both made their way to the first Switch despite skeptical headlines. If GTA 6 proves to be a long-tail success that runs for a decade like GTA Online, a future cloud-based or heavily optimized version for Nintendo hardware can’t be ruled out entirely.

Where You’ll Actually Play GTA 6

For now, Grand Theft Auto 6 is confirmed only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a launch window set for fall 2025. Notably, even PC players are being left waiting at launch, following Rockstar’s familiar pattern of staggered platform releases.
