Now the studio is signalling that a sequel could genuinely happen — provided someone stumps up a cool $100 million through their current game jam Kickstarter.
The Most Metal Stretch Goal in Kickstarter History
Double Fine is currently running a Kickstarter campaign built around one of its signature game jams — the studio’s long-running tradition (best known as Amnesia Fortnight) of pausing regular development so the team can prototype weird and wonderful ideas dreamed up by staff. Tucked among the campaign’s stretch goals is the one fans have begged for since 2009: Brütal Legend 2, unlocked at the eye-watering $100 million mark.
Let’s be honest — nobody seriously expects that target to be hit. But including it at all tells us something important: the desire to return to the Land of Metal is alive and well at Double Fine, and the studio is all in if the money ever materialises.

Why Ownership Mattered
Under Microsoft’s ownership, a Brütal Legend sequel always felt like a long shot. In an industry obsessed with safe, franchise-driven bets, a cult classic that mixes open-world action with divisive stage-battle strategy was never an obvious greenlight — even in this IP-hungry era where nostalgic revivals are everywhere.
But Microsoft no longer owns Double Fine, and the once-again indie developer can more or less do whatever it wants. This game jam Kickstarter, joke stretch goals and all, is exactly the kind of playful, fan-facing chaos that defined the studio before the acquisition — and it’s good to see it back.
A Quick Refresher on Brütal Legend
Released in 2009 and directed by Tim Schafer, Brütal Legend starred Jack Black as Eddie Riggs, a roadie dragged into a fantasy world built entirely from heavy metal album-cover iconography. The voice cast was absurdly stacked for metal fans: Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford and Tim Curry all lent their talents.
Critics and players were split on the game’s surprise real-time strategy elements, but its world, humour and thunderous soundtrack earned it a devoted fanbase that has spent well over a decade campaigning for a follow-up.
Double Fine Knows Crowdfunding Better Than Anyone
If any studio understands fan-funded dreams, it’s Double Fine. Back in 2012, its Kickstarter for what became Broken Age raised more than $3 million and helped ignite the crowdfunding boom across the entire games industry.
So while a $100 million goal is clearly tongue-in-cheek, it doubles as a wink: Brütal Legend 2 is not off the table. If the response to this campaign is loud enough, it’s easy to imagine those internal conversations getting a little more serious.
