PC modders hoping to battle their friends in a fan-made version of The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer are in for a disappointment. A highly anticipated PvP mod for the PC version of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed action-adventure has been scrapped — not because of technical issues, but because Sony Interactive Entertainment personally stepped in and asked the creator not to release it.
Sony Contacts Mod Creator, Project Shut Down
The mod, which aimed to bring player-versus-player multiplayer combat to The Last of Us Part 2 on PC, had been generating serious buzz within the modding community. Videos showcasing the project in action suggested it was well on its way to becoming one of the most ambitious fan creations ever built on top of Naughty Dog’s engine.
However, the mod’s developer has confirmed that Sony Interactive Entertainment reached out directly and requested that the project not be released to the public. Rather than risk legal consequences or a protracted dispute with one of the industry’s most litigious publishers, the creator has agreed to cancel the release.
A Pattern of IP Protection
This is far from the first time Sony has intervened in the PC modding scene. The company has a well-documented history of shutting down fan projects that touch its flagship franchises, from mods that bring Playstation-exclusive characters into other games to unauthorized remakes of classic titles. While modding is generally tolerated — and even celebrated — when it stays within a single game’s ecosystem, projects that could be seen as competing with official products or diluting brand control tend to attract legal attention.
The Irony Behind the Cancellation
There’s a bitter twist here for fans of The Last of Us multiplayer. Naughty Dog famously cancelled its own official live-service multiplayer project, commonly known as Factions, back in December 2023. The studio stated that releasing and supporting a large-scale online game would divert resources from single-player development — the very thing the studio is known and loved for.
That decision left The Last of Us Part 2 without any online component on either PlayStation 5 or PC, despite the original game’s Factions mode remaining a fan favorite for years. In that light, the cancelled mod represented something the community genuinely wanted but was never officially given: a way to keep fighting in Naughty Dog’s brutally tense PvP sandbox.
What This Means for the TLOU Modding Community
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered arrived on PC in April 2025, ported once again with the involvement of Nixxes Software, and the platform quickly developed a thriving modding scene. From visual overhauls to gameplay tweaks, the community has extended the life of Ellie and Abby’s story in countless creative ways.
Unfortunately, this incident sends a clear message about the limits of that creativity. Single-player modifications appear to be safe territory for now, but anything resembling a standalone multiplayer experience — especially one that could theoretically compete with future official offerings — is likely to be shut down before it ever reaches the public.
Could Official Multiplayer Ever Return?
With Sony still investing heavily in live-service gaming, some fans hold out hope that a future The Last of Us online experience could be revived in some form. Others believe the franchise’s multiplayer days are over for good. Either way, for now, the only way to experience The Last of Us Part 2 remains its celebrated single-player campaign — and judging by its critical reception, that’s hardly a consolation prize.
