When work on Persona 4 Revival began, Atlus reportedly reached out to the original English voice actors in hopes of bringing the whole ensemble back. But juggling the schedules and availability of a large cast, many of whom have moved on to major roles in anime, film, and video games over the past 15 years, proved to be a serious challenge.
Faced with the reality that some performers simply could not return, the team had two options: mix returning veterans with new voices, or recast the entire roster. Atlus chose the latter, with the team describing the mindset simply as, “Let’s start over.”
Why Not Mix Old and New Voices?
From a production standpoint, the “all or nothing” approach makes sense. Persona 4 is a character-driven game where the chemistry between the cast is arguably its greatest strength. A remake where half the Investigation Team sounds familiar and half sounds brand new could create an uneven, disjointed experience — something Atlus clearly wanted to avoid. By recasting everyone, the studio can rebuild that ensemble dynamic from the ground up for a new generation of players.
History Repeats: Persona 3 Reload Set the Precedent
This isn’t Atlus’s first full recast. Persona 3 Reload, the 2024 remake of Persona 3, also launched with an entirely new English voice lineup, despite similar fan outcry at the time. That game went on to become one of Atlus’s fastest-selling titles ever, proving that a fresh cast doesn’t have to hold a remake back. Persona 4 Revival appears to be following the same playbook — for better or worse, depending on who you ask.
Fan Reactions: Nostalgia Meets a Fresh Start
Unsurprisingly, longtime fans have mixed feelings. The original English performances — from Yuri Lowenthal’s energetic Yosuke to Laura Bailey’s Rise and Troy Baker’s unforgettable Kanji — are deeply nostalgic for many players who experienced the game on PS2 or the Persona 4 Golden re-release on Vita. Some are disappointed to lose those iconic voices, while others are excited to hear a new interpretation of characters like Yu, Chie, Yukiko, and Naoto, especially with modern recording quality and direction.
Persona 4 Revival: What We Know So Far
Announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2025, Persona 4 Revival is a full remake of Persona 4 Golden, rebuilt with stunning modern visuals and launching on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam, with day-one availability on Game Pass.
